Welcome to New Mexico's Pueblos, Tribes and Reservations

Santa Clara Pueblo

North central region of New MexicoThe Puyé Cliff Dwellers established the pueblo around 1550, when drought forced them from their cliff homes into the Río Grande Valley. Today, more than 10,000 descendants of these people live in the Tewa-language pueblo.

Santa Clara is noted for its pottery. Two vessel shapes are known as being distinctly Santa Claran—Santa Clara Pueblo deer dancerthe wedding jar, a double-necked jar with two mouths connected by a handle, and black animal figurines that are molded rather than coiled.

Santa Clara operates Black Mesa Golf Course, which has received national acclaim for its challenging play; 115 N.M. 339 in La Mesilla; (505) 747-8946, www.blackmesagolfcourse.com.

For family fun visit the Big Rock Casino and Bowl in the city of Española; (505) 747-0059, www.bigrockcasino.com.

The pueblo is located about a mile (1.6 km.) south of Española on N.M. 30. Visitors to the pueblo must check in at the governor’s office.  Photography, sketching and video recording permits are available throughout most of the year but are not available on feast days.
