New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, Keep New Mexico Beautiful
Honor Mike Maloof with Santa Fe Tree Planting Ceremony May 8, 2008
In celebration of the life of Mike Maloof, who passed away in 2006, New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, a program of the New Mexico Tourism Department, and the non-profit Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc., planted a tree in his memory May 8, 2008, on the grounds of the Bataan Building at the corner of Don Gaspar and South Capitol in Santa Fe.
Mike Maloof served on the Keep New Mexico Beautiful board (1968-2005) and as its president during his tenure; and along with his wife Dee was chairman of the State’s Birthday Celebration for many years. In addition Mike also served on the New Mexico Clean & Beautiful Litter Control Council (1988-2005).
“Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc. and New Mexico Clean & Beautiful are honoring a board member and council member who dedicated personal time to the organizations,” said Joe Lobato, Executive Director of New Mexico Clean & Beautiful. “Mike contributed his time, ideas and money for the betterment of the citizens of New Mexico.”
In attendance at the ceremony were be members of the Maloof family, affiliate coordinators of Keep New Mexico Beautiful from around the state, and Tourism Department officials.
A native of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Mike Maloof was an owner and director of Maloof Companies. He served as a director of First National Bank of Albuquerque and First Security Bank and was involved in civic projects; was director of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce; and was a member of the New Mexico State University Foundation, the Elks and Kiwanis.
Mike Maloof was also honored as a distinguished alumnus of the NMSU College of Business Administration and Economics and inducted into the NMSU College of Business Hall of Fame. He was also president of the Great Southwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America at a time when participants grew by more than 5,000.
“We commend New Mexico Clean & Beautiful for its hard work and the efforts of volunteers around the state, like Mike Maloof, who give of their time and money for the benefit of all New Mexico communities in keeping the Land of Enchantment a showcase for themselves and their visitors,” Secretary Cerletti said.
New Mexico Clean and Beautiful, a program of the New Mexico Tourism Department, was created by the Litter Control and Beautification Act of 1985 and is affiliated with the national organization Keep America Beautiful, Inc. The program is charged with coordinating statewide litter control and beautification efforts. Both programs motivate millions of volunteers annually to clean up, beautify and improve their neighborhoods.
